Calculate a U.S. required minimum distribution from a prior December 31 retirement-account balance. The projection shows how withdrawing only the calculated RMD at year-end could affect later distributions and balances.

How to use this calculator

Check the distribution year, prior year-end account balance, and applicable beneficiary assumptions before calculating. Compare the amount with distributions already taken for that year. Account types and exceptions can change which rules apply; use the rule notes and sources below.

Examples

Age 75 in 2026

A person born in 1951 is age 75 in 2026. The Uniform Lifetime Table period is 24.6, so a $300,000 balance produces an RMD of $12,195.12.

Formula

RMD = prior December 31 balance ÷ distribution period. The projection grows the balance for the year and then subtracts that year's RMD: ending balance = beginning balance × (1 + return) − RMD.

Tax rules and inherited-account deadlines can be complex. Confirm the applicable table and deadline with the current IRS Publication 590-B or a tax professional.

Table selection and limits

The calculator uses the Uniform Lifetime Table unless the entered spouse is both the sole beneficiary and more than 10 years younger, in which case it uses the Joint and Last Survivor Table. That rule and the tables are in IRS Publication 590-B; the IRS RMD FAQ explains account aggregation. This tool does not handle inherited accounts, annuity adjustments, first-year deadline choices, employer-plan still-working exceptions, or corrective distributions.

Frequently asked questions

What balance is used for an RMD?
For a normal calendar-year calculation, use the eligible retirement account's balance on December 31 of the preceding year.
How is an RMD calculated?
Divide the prior year-end balance by the applicable IRS distribution period. The Joint and Last Survivor table applies only when the spouse is the sole beneficiary and is more than 10 years younger; otherwise an owner normally uses the Uniform Lifetime table.
When do standard RMDs begin?
Under current federal rules, the applicable age depends on birth year—generally 73 for people born from 1951 through 1959 and 75 for those born in 1960 or later.
Is a Roth IRA subject to lifetime RMDs?
An original Roth IRA owner generally has no lifetime RMD, though inherited-account rules can apply.
