Keep a baseline, then change an assumption to see its effect side by side.

Enter any two of the VAT rate, net (before-tax) price, gross (tax-inclusive) price, and tax amount. The calculator solves the other two — add VAT, strip VAT out of a receipt, or recover the rate from two prices. The same formulas apply to GST.

Choose the rate and taxable amount

Use the rate that applies to the goods or services and transaction date. Standard, reduced, zero, and exempt treatment are different concepts, and place-of-supply rules can change which jurisdiction applies. This calculator does not determine registration, input-tax credits, invoice requirements, or whether an amount is taxable.

Examples

8% VAT on a $1,200 net price

At 8%, VAT on $1,200 is $96, so the customer pays a gross $1,296.

Backing VAT out of $99.99 at 20%

A $99.99 gross price at 20% is $99.99 ÷ 1.20. Rounded independently, the net is $83.33 and the VAT is $16.67.

Zero-rated goods

A 0% rate on a $1,200 net price adds $0 of tax; gross equals net. Enter 0 in the rate field with the net price — do not leave the net blank.

Formula

VAT is a percentage of the net price, not of the gross. Each displayed money value is rounded to the nearest cent from the raw (unrounded) figure.

tax amount = net × (rate ÷ 100)
gross price = net + tax = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
net price = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
VAT rate = (gross ÷ net − 1) × 100
            = (tax ÷ net) × 100
To take VAT out of a total, divide by (1 + rate) — do not subtract the rate from the gross. Subtracting 8% of $1,296 slightly overstates the tax and understates the net.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a net price?
Multiply the net (before-tax) price by the VAT rate, then add that tax to the net. At 8% on $1,200 the tax is $1,200 × 0.08 = $96, so the gross (tax-inclusive) price is $1,200 + $96 = $1,296.
How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
Divide the gross (tax-inclusive) price by one plus the VAT rate. A $1,296 total at 8% is $1,296 ÷ 1.08 = $1,200 net, so the VAT was $96. Do not subtract 8% of the gross — that overstates the tax.
How do I find the VAT rate from two prices?
Divide the gross price by the net price and subtract one, then multiply by 100. $1,296 ÷ $1,200 − 1 = 0.08, or 8%. Equivalently, tax ÷ net × 100.
What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?
Sales tax is usually collected once, from the end customer at checkout. VAT is charged at each stage of the supply chain on the value added, with prior-stage tax credited so tax is not stacked on tax. The U.S. uses sales tax; most other countries use VAT (sometimes called GST).
Is VAT the same as GST?
Some jurisdictions call a broad consumption tax a goods and services tax. The add-tax and remove-tax arithmetic is the same when the tax is calculated as a percentage of the net price, but registration, credits, place-of-supply rules, and invoice treatment remain jurisdiction-specific.
