Leave blank if unknown. Provide any two of a, b, and c. Opposite angle α.

√

Optional radicand. If both this and the coefficient are set, the side is coefficient × √(this). If only this is set, the side is √(this).

Leave blank if unknown. Provide any two of a, b, and c. Opposite angle β.

√

Optional radicand. If both this and the coefficient are set, the side is coefficient × √(this). If only this is set, the side is √(this).

Leave blank if unknown. Provide any two of a, b, and c. The longest side, opposite the right angle.

√

Default example uses c = 2√5 with a = 2, so b = 4.

Include the worked Pythagorean, angle, area, perimeter, and height steps.

Calculation steps

Worked solution
b = √(c² − a²)
= √((2√5)² − (2)²)
= √(20 − 4)
= √16
= 4
∠α = arcsin(a / c)
= arcsin(0.44721359549996)
= 26.565° = 26°33'54" = 0.46365 rad
∠β = arcsin(b / c)
= arcsin(0.89442719099992)
= 63.435° = 63°26'6" = 1.10715 rad
area = a × b / 2
= 2 × 4 / 2
= 4
perimeter = a + b + c
= 2 + 4 + 2√5
= 10.472135955
h = a × b / c
= 2 × 4 / 2√5
= 4√5 / 5 = 1.7888543819998

Enter any two sides of a right triangle — legs a and b, or hypotenuse c — and this calculator solves a² + b² = c² for the missing length. Optional √ fields let you type 2√5 the way the theorem is written. Results include both acute angles, area, perimeter, the altitude to the hypotenuse, and worked steps.

Examples

Classic 3-4-5 triangle

a = 3, b = 4. c = √(9 + 16) = √25 = 5. ∠α = arcsin(0.6) = 36.87° = 36°52'12" = 0.6435 rad. Area = 6, perimeter = 12, h = 12 / 5 = 2.4.

Coefficient times a square root (default)

a = 2 and c = 2√5. b = √((2√5)² − 2²) = √(20 − 4) = 4. The same triangle is a 1-2-√5 right triangle scaled by 2.

Isosceles right triangle

a = 1, b = 1. c = √2 ≈ 1.4142135623731. Both acute angles are 45° = π/4, and h = √2 / 2 ≈ 0.70710678118655.

Formula

In a right triangle the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the legs:

a² + b² = c²

Solve for whichever side is unknown:

c = √(a² + b²)
a = √(c² − b²)
b = √(c² − a²)

The acute angles, area, perimeter, and altitude to the hypotenuse follow once all three sides are known:

∠α = arcsin(a / c)
∠β = arcsin(b / c)
area = a × b / 2
perimeter = a + b + c
h = a × b / c

The default example is a = 2 and c = 2√5. Then b = √(20 − 4) = √16 = 4, area = 4, and h = 4√5 / 5 ≈ 1.7888543819998.

Triangle limits

The relationship a² + b² = c² applies only to a right triangle, with c opposite the 90° angle. Measurements that do not satisfy the relationship may reflect rounding or a triangle that is not right. Derived angles and lengths inherit input uncertainty and are rounded for display.

Frequently asked questions

How many sides do I need to enter?
Enter any two of a, b, and c. The calculator solves a² + b² = c² for the missing length. Each side can be a plain number, a square root (√9), or a coefficient times a square root (2√5). Zero and blank fields are treated as unknown.
What if I fill in all three sides?
The result is based on a and b only — c is recomputed from the theorem. Clear c if you meant to solve for the hypotenuse, or clear a or b if you meant to solve for a leg.
Why must a and b be shorter than c?
c is the hypotenuse, the longest side of a right triangle. If a given leg is as long as or longer than c, no right triangle exists with those lengths: a² + b² = c² cannot hold for a positive b (or a).
What are ∠α, ∠β, area, perimeter, and h?
∠α = arcsin(a / c) is the angle opposite leg a; ∠β = arcsin(b / c) is opposite b. They are listed in degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds, and radians. Area is ab / 2, perimeter is a + b + c, and h = ab / c is the altitude to the hypotenuse.
How do I enter a value under a square root?
Use the √ field next to a, b, or c. √9 alone means 3. Coefficient 2 with √5 means 2√5. The default example is a = 2 and c = 2√5, which gives b = 4.
